When Mrs. Warren’s cloistered daughter finally discovers the funding source of her privileged upbringing, she rebels: who is her father? Banned for 30 years, Shaw’s comedic indictment of capitalist society’s moral hypocrisy regarding women’s sexual agency still feels contemporary. A Shavian Mama, Mia!
What good is sitting alone in your room? Join City Stage New West in a comfy “living room” setting at the Anvil Centre for the 2019 Sips ‘n Scripts reading series: Censored! Forbidden Classics of the Wicked Stage, featuring three banned comedies spanning twenty-three hundred years of history, all addressing still-controversial themes of women’s sexual agency.
People can sit back with their “sips” and just enjoy the readings or participate by reading supporting roles with City Stage New West’s professional actors. Have fun adding in sound effects or engaging in intermission activities as well. Post-reading discussions with experts, artists and facilitators will include histories of the works, their impact and their censorship.
