The 2015/2016 Vancouver Sun Symphony at the Annex series concludes with The Elusive, Imaginary Future — music inspired by worlds of the imagination and predictions of the future. Octandre is a classic by Edgard Varèse, whose music was influenced by the Futurists and who was himself christened “L'illustro futuro” by Ferrucio Busoni. Melissa Hui’s From Dusk to Dawn is a dream-like vision of night, while Gabriel Dharmoo uses his ingenious concept of imaginary folklore, writing the fog in our poise as if a musician in an imaginary culture. Katia Makdissi-Warren’s multivalent Parade blends influences from Middle Eastern/Western, jazz, classical, electronic, and tango. And finally, Julia Wolfe’s The Vermeer Room was inspired by Vermeer’s peaceful A girl asleep. This inspiration is more intriguing when you know about the ghostly male figure watching from the doorway, erased completely by Vermeer but revealed by X-ray technology.
