Tonye Aganaba 7 – 7:45 p.m.
Tonye Aganaba was born in London, England to parents of Nigerian and Zimbabwean descent, and moved to Canada at the age of 13. Tonye attended the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre Program.
"Tonye’s style, like her gender, is fluid (or at the very least non-binary) – but can be described as Soul/Neo-Folk/R&B, and although unique – they have been likened to folx like Lauryn Hill, Ani DiFranco and Chaka Khan. Tonye is a Much More Music Video Award recipient, a steadfast fixture in their arts community – and the kind of singer/performer that turns heads wherever they go."
In early 2015, their trajectory was interrupted by a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, but the full stop came two years later, when a car accident on an icy back road in the Peace Region left their spine fractured in six places. All plans were waylaid as they lay bedridden and isolated for months. In the fall of 2017, Tonye parted ways with 604 Records & Paquin Artists and set out on a journey of self-discovery and healing.
Tonye’s new album “Something Comfortable” is a raw and masterful offering that effortlessly draws listeners in, a powerful testament to the creative archetypes.
R&B Allstars 8:15 – 9 p.m.
The Rhythm & Blues Allstars (RBA) are a dynamic, aggressive 10-piece band from Vancouver formed in 1979 that has gained popularity at Lower Mainland's hottest night spots. Over the years, the band has been a home for many of local premiere musicians and still continues to bring audiences to their feet. RBA has recorded a number of singles and live albums, and their most recent DVD, Live at The Hard Rock, has brought many positive reviews.
For 2019, the powerful vocals of Nathen Aswell have been added to those of Joani Bye, Tim Porter, Peter Juric and Billy Mendoza. Tim Porter has not brought not only his great voice to the band, but his amazing guitar skills. A funky powerhouse rhythm section features Billy Mendoza (bass), Rick Hill (drums) and the iconic Hammond skills of Robbie Buchanan. The brass still kicks ass with the awesome Steve Hilliam (tenor sax), Peter Juric (trumpet), Colin Weinmaster (trombone) and Bill “Maseo” Abbott (alto sax). This year they celebrate their 40th year on the Vancouver scene.
Child-friendly and pets on leash welcome!
