Tash Aw’s writing is consistently lyrical and cutting, and has received nominations for the Whitbread First Novel Award, two Man Booker Prizes and The LA Times Book Prize. His new novel, We, the Survivors, captures the expansive changes in Asian societies over the century, and illuminates the lives of those at the bottom of the gulf between rich and poor which, Aw explains, “is much greater than in the west.” His story of Ah Hock—a poor Malaysian fisherman whose dreams of betterment (and a regular salary) are siphoned by an act of violence—is by far Aw’s most personal book, and its potency lingers long after reading. Who better to speak with the author about his ability to unearth the complex modern challenges of a continent than beloved CBC Writers and Company host, Eleanor Wachtel?
