Wrap up your 2019 Modulus Festival experience with “liquid cascades of percussion”, care of John Luther Adams’ epic Ilimaq. Featuring percussionist Ben Reimer, Ilimaq – which means “spirit journey” in the Inupiaq language – explores spirituality through a diverse range of sounds, rhythm, and melodies.
This solo percussion piece is as volatile as it is meditative, compelling listeners to get swept up in a different sort of virtuosity: endurance. Combining electro-acoustic sensibilities with intense physicality, this “trance music” is worth getting lost in.
