New Westminster Symphony Orchestra: Do I Hear a Waltz?

a concert of music that according to Symphony President John Davies will have you at least tapping your toes if it doesn’t have you out of your seat and dancing. Maestro Jin Zhang has selected a repertoire of music drawn from the Vienna Woods, rural Slavonia, and the world of ballet for this concert.

To start things off the orchestra will transport you to the concert halls of Vienna with the familiar strains of one of Johann Strauss’ masterpieces, the Emperor Waltz, and follow that with the equally uplifting Gold and Silver Waltz by Franz Lehar; selections that are often performed at New Year’s concerts. After that the Symphony will feature Slavonic Dances by Antonin Dvorak, Charles Gounod’s Ballet music from Faust, and Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite. Along the way you will also hear Jean Sibelius’ mesmerizing Valse Triste.

As always, the NWSO policy of “admission by donation” ensures that everyone who enjoys good classical music can attend our concerts in a barrier free, accesible way.

The NWSO takes pride in the cultural, ethnic and age diversity of their orchestra members. Their current playing members and auxiliary volunteers range from their teens to 70+ years, with an equal balance of male and female members. The NWSO is home to dedicated musicians from all backgrounds and training, providing them with an opportunity to perform with a professionally-directed symphony orchestra.
