In 2017, author Robert Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris created a magical book called The Lost Words: A Spell Book. It was a whimsical and evocative response to the fact that, in 2007, the Oxford Junior Dictionary had replaced 40 words about the natural world with words about the digital one. “Adder” and “willow” had given way to “cut-and-paste” and “voice mail”. Written in hope, Robert’s “spells” are meant to conjure back twenty of the lost creatures and plants in the lives of children and adults, and Jackie’s stunning paintings hold the reader spellbound. The Lost Words: A Spell Book has quickly taken on a life of its own around the world and is now a bestseller, with additional educational materials developed by the John Muir Trust.
Elektra Women’s Choir, known internationally for its leadership in developing compelling new repertoire for women’s choirs, has commissioned ten Canadian composers to set two “spells” each. The performances will be a treat for the eyes and ears, with large-screen projection of the book’s illustrations, an actor reading each spell, and the new compositions performed by Elektra and a small ensemble of instrumentalists.
