Bright Lights, Thicker Glasses
Brighter Lights, Thicker Glasses (Dunn, Samuels, Palmer, Bourchier) is a Vancouver quartet of eclectic proportions. The band celebrates variety, and so their credo is, “Let no song suggest the style played next.” Sets include tweaked covers and original songs in many styles, everything from folk and rock to world and jazz, and everything in between. Their 2013 debut CD, The Cambrian Explosion, is available on iTunes & CD Baby.
Dunn (guitar, ukulele, kora, kabosy, Paraguayan harp) is a world music aficionado and world-renowned luthier. His instruments have been played by Chet Atkins, Bob Brozman, and Woody Mann. Samuels (cello) is classically trained, but best known for his work with the bands Great Northern and Dido and The Handpeople, and as the composer of CBC Radio’s Morning Show theme song. Palmer (West African and Indian percussion, guitar, dulcimer, kabosy) is an award-winning music educator and songwriter. His guitar work is unique, as he lacks fingers on his chording-hand. Bourchier (guitars) is a classically-trained guitarist, but went on to grace the Vancouver Jazz Festival stage several times as a bassist with The Just Jazz Quartet and Christina Barcelona.
John Pippus & Friends
Born in Winnipeg, based in Vancouver, John (vocals, guitar) tours regularly in The Netherlands, Ontario, and around BC. His original songs are played on radio stations around the world and in Vancouver on LG104.3 FM. John invites a changing line-up of musical friends to join him for each Roundhouse performance.
Stringz Aloud
The Stringz Aloud Trio is composed of Susan Vigneux (guitar and vocal)s, Don Kellett (guitar, mandolin and steel guitar), and Joe Bourchier (bass). Since 2008 the group has been performing at a variety of public venues (coffee houses, small clubs and farmers markets) as well as private functions around the Vancouver area. They play a variety of tunes ranging from swing and gypsy jazz to Brazillian choros and Hawaiian tunes, performed on acoustic and amplified acoustic instruments. The members of the group also perform in other groups in Vancouver area, as well as teach music and are involved in Vancouver’s Co-op Radio station CFRO 110.5 FM.
Raincity Swing
Bass player Annie Bailey, along with guitarists Michael Morrison and Terry Hoffman make up Raincity Swing. They’ve been playing together for more than 10 years, beginning as students in the community-based Moveable Music School. Their repertoire includes classic swing tunes from the Great American Songbook and beyond. In addition to the Roundhouse Community Centre, the Thursday Jazz Trio plays at the Trout Lake Community Centre, as part of its Music on the Bow series. Their constant goals: play good music, make people happy.
The Cambridge Street Combo
Join Annie Baley (stand up bass, vocals), Cathie Best (keyboards, vocals), Dean Jackson (guitar), and Michael Morrison (guitar, vocals) for their fun take on ballads, blues, swing and standards from the American song book with some jazzy bits thrown in.
