Specializing in bharata natyam, one of the most cherished and popular of the Indian classical dance styles, Mandala operates under the artistic direction of Jai Govinda, recipient of the Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award 2014 – Honouree/ Dance.
For this Dance Allsorts presentation, Jai Govinda will introduce this dance style with performances by the best of his company dancers. Originally performed as an offering to the gods in the temples of South India, bharata natyam survived abolition and near extinction to be revived and brought to the stage some 100 years ago. In this unique presentation, Mandala will bring forth all the elements that make this dance form so rich and relevant.
Dance Allsorts is dynamic and inspiring performance and workshop series presented by New Works and held with gratitude on unceded Coast Salish Territory. Currently in its 19th season, Dance Allsorts introduces all sorts of dance to all sorts of people.
