In this teaching residency, he will help students explore ideas concerning the use of space through the manipulation of composite forms. Residency participants will find new ways to realize their ideas in ceramics through studio time, critiques, conversation, and demonstrations. (See Surrey Art Gallery web page for more details.) Keith Rice-Jones explores Modernist forms in his Monumental Sculptures exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery. In this teaching residency, the focus will be for participants to design and make their own sculptural piece, exploring and manipulating space and form. In the same way, scale will be related to projected placement or use of the piece and limited by the time restrictions of the workshop. Monumental qualities do not depend on size! In the evening introduction Keith will get the workshop off to a flying start, by showing inspirational images and introducing a small challenging starter project. This will be an exciting initial learning experience, and an opportunity for the artist to give initial feedback to participants on their ideas. Then, be prepared to hit the ground running on Friday morning! If you work on Friday, don't worry - you can take prepared material away to work at home and come on Saturday with your project on the go.
