Celebrate the unveiling of two monumental deer sculptures at the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre in South Surrey.
Date/Time: Jun 11 2016, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Surrey, Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre
You're invited to celebrate the unveiling of a bold, contemporary public artwork titled Circulation by Pierre Sasseville and Jean-François Cooke that will be formally recognized as part of the opening celebrations of Surrey’s new Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre in South Surrey. Join Mayor, Councillors, and members of the Public Art Advisory Committee for the recognition ceremony. Ribbon cutting is at 12:30pm. The artists will be in attendance and will give a talk about their work at 1pm.
Circulation is a two-part sculpture featuring deer that references the dual purpose of the new Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre. Situated near the shallow end, a giant bronze fawn drinks from a fountain, representing the recreational side of the pool. Near the deep end, 6 deer confront each other, symbolizing the competitions that will take place at this 10-lane, Olympic size pool with world-class diving facilities.
These two monumental contemporary sculptures have been designed to suggest connections and interrelationships between family-oriented recreation and high-level competition, and between nature and culture.
The colours and forms are playful references to the building’s hot and cold water plumbing, as well as to blood and oxygen circulation systems of the human body.
About the Artists
Cooke-Sasseville’s artwork is known for their uncommon use of familiar forms through strange but simple visual transformations. Since joining their practices in 2002, they have developed an approach that can be provocative and witty. A notable example of their approach is Mélangez le Tout (Mix it All, 2011), which looks like a giant hand mixer. The artists have described the use of culinary mixers in their practice as a visual substitute for homogenizing forces. They recently completed a public art commission Le Passe-temps (2013) for Petite-Rivière-Saint-François and have done commissions for other towns such as Donnacona, L’Ancienne-Lorette, and Thetford Mines in Quebec.
