lace|heart|art exhibition presents colourful hearts, all made by hand in traditional lacemaking techniques. If the word “lace” brings to mind your great-aunt doilies, or a popular saying that “lace is a lost art”, you are in for a big surprise. The lace|heart|art collection introduces living and vibrant rendition of lace - contemporary lace art as a testament of the unlimited creative potential of the time-honoured technique.
For 500 years, handmade bobbin lace skills were passed down from mothers to daughters, and grandmothers to granddaughters, as a treasure which not only produced delicate textiles for fashion and family heirlooms, but also instilled qualities of patience, perseverance and refinement in lacemakers from all walks of life.
Knowledge accumulated over centuries was preserved, and inherited by today’s lacemakers-hobbyists, as well as contemporary artists, who transform lace designs into unique art.
lace|heart|art exhibition is accompanied by a display of original lace art by lacemakers from Surrey and Metro Vancouver. Fibre lace wall art, wire lace sculpture and mixed media lace jewellery showcase versatility of lace and creativity of the makers.
Not to be missed are lacemaking demonstrations and a try-out station, always popular with curious visitors of all ages.
To celebrate family bonds, especially on Mother’s Day weekend, an oversized lace heart picture frame will be available for portraits. Come and take a photo with, or for, your Mom!
Great outing for Mother’s Day weekend!
