This work explores the community around a Modernist-era screening house in Karachi, Pakistan, the last in a line of historic cinemas in the city. Nearly destroyed by a mob of protestors in 2012, the restored cinema is the setting for Thauberger’s highly characteristically collaborative process, and creates a portrait of a complex site, its social role in the community and its survival within a rapidly changing city. Curated by CAG Curator Kimberly Phillips, this exhibition will be accompanied by a major monographic publication—the first for Thauberger—created in partnership with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
