This spring the Contemporary Art Gallery will present the intimate video and photographic work of Madiha Aijaz for the first time in Canada. Aijaz was an award-winning Pakastani artist whose presence in Karachi supported Althea Thauberger’s project included in the sister exhibition at CAG, Pagal Pagal Pagal Pagal Filmy Dunya, and who died unexpectedly last year. Co-curated by CAG Curator Kimberly Phillips and Karachi-based curator Zarmeene Shah, the exhibition will include a suite of images from A Railway Pilgrimage in Pakistan (2014) and the single-channel video These Silences Are All the Words (2018). Through conversations with the city’s librarians and library patrons, Aijaz explores the complexity of the post-colonial state and Pakistan’s shift in language usage from Urdu, with its poetic and literary history, to English.
Presented in partnership with Capture Photography Festival
