It was in 1961 when Diana started out as lead singer of the world-renowned singing group The Supremes. Together they released a total of twelve #1 hits including “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “Back in My Arms Again”, “I Hear a Symphony”, “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”.
After leaving the group to pursue a solo career in 1970, she released her eponymous debut album which featured the #1 single, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”. Her later albums spawned a string of hits including “Touch Me in the Morning”, “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)”, “Love Hangover”, “Upside Down”, “I’m Coming Out” and the duet, “Endless Love” with Lionel Richie.
In 2005, she recorded another hit duet, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” … this time with Rod Stewart. The following year, she made the jazz charts with her album, Blue. A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award, she has also been presented with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
As an actress, she received an Oscar nomination for her first film role as “Billy Holiday” in Lady Sings the Blues (1972). She later starred in Mahogany (1975) and The Wiz (1978). Her role as a woman living with schizophrenia in the 1994 television movie, Out of Darkness earned her glowing reviews and a Golden Globe nomination.
