His new project Hymns and Visions (ECM) explores and interprets ancient Norwegian hymns translated into the hauntingly beautiful Pashto language, as well as newly composed settings of Sufi poetry. A rising star in European jazz, Afghan-German vocalist Simin Tander hums, sighs, and bends notes tenderly, arching upwards from Gustavsen’s lyrical minimalism and subtle electronics, and the impressionist drumming of Jarle Vespestad (formerly of Supersilent).
