Much of the current debate in this area frames freedom of expression as an absolute right, limited only by criminal sanctions against extreme hateful comment. But this approach ignores human rights, and social justice. Not all forms of expression are permitted.
Join Adrienne Smith, a non-binary transgender lawyer, for an accessible, plain language discussion of the relationship between the legal concepts of freedom of expression, hate speech, academic freedom, and human rights protection for transgender and non-binary people. Key features of contemporary transphobia related to expressive freedom and discrimination protection will also be discussed.
