This is simply the best definition of trova: poetry with music; and next July 7th in Vancouver you can enjoy this cultural experience with the International Trova Fest as part of the Latin American Week. This event will feature artists from different Latin American countries.
Trova songs are a cultural expression in which lyrics convey ideas and emotions. Cuba in the nineteenth century was the Latin American country where this musical trend, which originated in medieval Europe with the troubadours, evolved.
Traditional Latin Trova was transformed to ‘The Cuban New Trova’ in the 1970’s, with its songs about love, as well as about social protest content. This musical movement soon spread to other Latin American countries and to Spain, with singer songwriters like Pablo Milanes, Silvio Rodriguez, Joan Manuel Serrat, Luis Eduardo Aute and Facundo Cabral, among others. Now the concept is broader and includes all folk music from Spanish speaking countries.
At the International Trova Fest we are going to enjoy a rainbow of music from Latin America and Spain.
Artists:
- Rompiendo Fronteras: (Breaking Boundaries) is a trio from Colombia who in their interpretation of Latin American music includes an accordion, a singer and a guitarist as well an upright bass guitar.
- Son Bohemio: (Bohemian Son Ensemble) will be offering bohemian songs (naturally!), and is comprised of two voices, a violin, a guitar and a Peruvian cajon, a box-shaped percussion instrument.
- Mezcla: (Mixture) is a full band playing popular songs from Argentina. The musicians come from Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, as well as an amazing French bass player.
- Beatriz Garmendia Trio: will introduce you to romantic boleros.
- TrovAndina: is a group offering a complete range of music from The Andes region.
- Tango Burnaby: is going to give a demonstration of tango dancing.
We invite you to enjoy a really nice bohemian atmosphere where you might just fall in love. The International Trova Fest brings the opportunity to discover the mix of unique rhythms that are found in this musical genre.
