When Lenny Solomon comes to KMAC, you will hear some fantastic Manouche style music reminiscent of the 'Hot Club of France' featuring Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Lenny’s jazz violin virtuosity has played a leading role in bringing a classical instrument into new, popular genres. Founder of the ‘Bowfire’ stage spectacle and Juno Award winner with 'Myles and Lenny,' Lenny Solomon’s jazz violin virtuosity has been recognized throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Called “Canada’s premier jazz violinist”, he has always explored new possibilities for the violin. Lenny’s career has been evolving through the decades since Lenny’s cutting edge rock violin featured in the Juno Award winning pop duo 'Myles and Lenny.' Solomon returned to a more traditional sound with the pop string quintet ‘Quintessence,' where he first collaborated with Canadian guitar legend, Bill Bridges. He has also established himself as a popular and versatile studio musician playing on hundreds of recordings and soundtracks. In the nineties Lenny released two well received jazz CD’s, 'After You’ve Gone' and 'The Gershwin Sessions.' With 'The Lenny Solomon Trio,' he was a three-time winner of The Jazz Report’s annual Violinist Of The Year award. With “TrioNorté”, Lenny won a SOCAN #1 Award for the video of his composition “Fernanda”.
Lenny’s hit international show, Bowfire, composed of 10 virtuoso string players at the forefront of their respective styles takes its audiences on a musical journey that moves seamlessly from Jazz, Classical, Bluegrass, Celtic, Rock, Gypsy, World, Texas Swing, Ottawa Valley and Cape Breton styles combined with equally gifted rhythm section musicians. Bowfire made its debut performance at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. In 2008 Bowfire filmed a PBS Special, Bowfire ‘Live’. Although Bowfire is not presently touring their DVD continues to be broadcast internationally. Lenny’s most recent release is The Blues Violin. It is a collection of original Blues tunes in a variety of settings.
Lenny will be joined by 3 of Vancouver’s finest Manouche or Gypsy Jazz veteran’s: Don Ogilvie and Michael Dunn, on guitars and Joe Bourchier on bass. Ogilvie, Dunn and Bourchier have played together for many years on many projects including ‘Djangoesque’ and ’The Lawless Firm.’ Michael Dunn is also one of Canada’s premier guitar builders.
