Opening Reception: Friday, July 15, 2016

Victoria-based Artist Rick Leong explores the synthesis of traditional imagery and symbols influenced by classical Chinese painting and the Canadian landscape. Leong, a Canadian-born, third-generation Chinese immigrant, blends his distinct style with traditional Chinese calligraphic and painting techniques to create new landscapes that are drawn from observation and memory as well as imagined. In his paintings, many newly created for this exhibition, Leong explores specific iconographical groups that hold distinct and recognizable meanings in Chinese culture. Exhibiting concurrently with this exhibition, Leong and RAG curator, Nan Capogna, will select work from local artists whose use of various iconographies drawn from their cultural traditions will be in dialogue with Leong’s paintings.
This exhibition is supported by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
Leong obtained his MFA from Concordia University (Montreal, 2007). In 2008, he was a finalist in the Royal Bank of Canada’s Painting Competition, touring at venues such as the National Gallery of Canada, the Power Plant (Toronto) and the Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver). Leong’s work has been exhibited internationally and across Canada and is collected nationally including Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Senvest, Col’Art, the ALDO Group, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
