Reach for the stars—or the planets! The Bergmann Duo will present Gustav Holst’s sonic, celestial masterpiece, The Planets, one of classical music’s most exciting and beloved works. The Planets is colourful, emotional, and full of movement—exactly what you’d expect from a trip through the galaxies and beyond. In this rousing afternoon performance, the Bergmann Duo will perform Holst’s original two piano version, and this show will also be accompanied by some beautiful visual imagery. This Coffee Concert also includes the ever-popular social hour before the show, so it’s guaranteed to be out of this world! This performance is part of the Coffee Concert series.
The History of The Planets
When it comes to musical interpretations of outer space, British composer Gustav Holst’s The Planets is where it all began. In the piece, Holst musically paints the characters of Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Earth is not included as The Planets are based on astrological configurations, and there is also no Pluto, as this was not discovered till 1930. Holst’s masterpiece was composed during the First World War and premiered in a private concert in Queen’s Hall in London in 1918 under the direction of Adrian Boult. Its popularity was immediate. The themes of war, glory and peace perfectly summed up the emotions in Europe at the time and now over a century later, it still entrances audiences around the world today.
About the Bergmann Duo
Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann have been performing together as a duo since 1989, and their dynamic and energetic performances of uniquely eclectic programs have inspired audiences for more than two decades. The duo, who are laureates of the Dranoff International Two Piano Competition, perform a wide variety of repertoire and styles, and enjoy dazzling audiences around the world at festivals and on tour. Their recitals and concerts with orchestras have taken them all over the world, including the United States, Italy, Germany, Holland, Greece, and Canada.
