Grab a friend and join us for Cosmic Nights – "Undead" Stars. Dive into hot topics in astronomy and space exploration in this fun evening of science and socializing. We‘ll have a custom planetarium show, guest lecturer, drinks, and science demonstrations at this 19+ event.
What happens to a star at the end of its life? What do old stars tell us about the Universe and what can we learn for the light of stars that reach us long after they have died? How can pulsars help us understand gravitational waves?
Special guest Kathryn Crowter from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia will be joining us to explore the answers to those questions.
Kathryn Crowter is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia. She studies pulsars - highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars - and is currently trying to discover new pulsars using CHIME, a radio telescope near Penticton. Kathryn is also a member of the NANOGrav collaboration who recently used pulsars to find evidence for low-frequency gravitational waves most likely given off by supermassive black holes.
Beer and wine will be available for purchase in the Cosmic Courtyard.
**In-person attendees must be 19+. Valid ID must be shown for entry.**
