The program begins with Reena Esmail’s ethereal and tender Saans (Breath), with its Indian-inspired improvisatory writing. This is followed by Points of Light by UBC’s Dorothy Chang, commissioned by the Trio for its 20th anniversary, inspired by the image of a triangle. The program ends with Dmitri Shostakovich’s haunting and devastating Trio in E minor, written during the Second World War as a commemoration of his friend Ivan Sollertinsky, but also inspired by Shostakovich’s horror at the first news of the Nazi death camps.
