The Stanley Park heron colony is the largest urban colony of Pacific Great Blue Herons in North America. Every spring, Pacific Great Blue Herons take to over a hundred nests on the edge of Downtown Vancouver to raise their young, and they’ve been doing so for more than a century.
Did you know that every spring, Pacific great blue herons take to over 100 nests to raise their young? And all at the intersection of Stanley Park and Downtown Vancouver? Don’t believe us? See for yourself! Join SPES Educator Julia Taylor for a special site visit to the Stanley Park heron rookery and learn all about how these beautiful and large birds navigate the canopy, build their nests, and raise their fledglings. You’ll also discover how Stanley Park Ecology stewards and supports the heron colony by protecting them from predators and monitoring their success in summer surveys. This is part of our annual series, “The Herons are Here”!
