What do you get when you blend 1930s jazz, ragtime and Delta blues with washboards, jugs and other vintage and homemade instruments? Why, the unique and unforgettable sounds of The Genuine Jug Band, of course!
Wear your overalls and straw hat, pack a picnic and a lawn chair, and join us on the Surrey Museum lawn for a family-friendly evening of crazy fun and historic music. This event is part of Surrey's Sounds of Summer series.
You're in for a real treat. The Genuine Jug Band offers a narrated musical tour of songs and stories from the late 1800s to 1940 that the whole family will love. Jug bands are a part of musical history, inspiring rock & roll and producing future superstars like Ringo Starr and John Lennon, Van Morrison, Mick Jagger, Jerry Garcia, Roger Daltrey and Jimmy Page.
Who's The Genuine Jug Band?
- Lead vocalist Professor Douglas Fraser is a musicologist, stand-up comic, and 3rd generation performer who will set your toes a-tapping with his ultra-rare 1931 Gibson Mastertone tenor banjo.
- Former rock drummer Tony "Mad Fingers McBride" plays the craziest percussion setup you've ever seen - it's been called a "work of art".
- Terry Devine is a showman who has played the same jug (or 'poor man's tuba') and gutbucket for 43 years! What's a gutbucket, you ask? Join us and find out!
