Informed by their family background in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), S F Ho has created a set of new artworks that draw parallels between principles of TCM and human-ecology relationships, imagining how care for the land can be interpretated as a form of relationality.
Central to the exhibit is the floor sculpture Triple Burner Flower Field. Made from clay laid out in a spiral shape, it references the oracle bone character for 回, the Chinese character for “return to.” The sculpture, surrounded by silk banners hand-dyed with tea and yarrow and printed with oracle bone characters, evokes the plant origins of some of the earliest written characters that would later evolve into Chinese script. Together, these works trace connections between principles of healing and language back to the land that shaped them.
A common principle in Traditional Chinese Medicine is to “treat the root, not the symptom.” TRIPLE BURNER FLOWER FIELD extends this idea to our relationship with the land, offering a timely reflection on what long-term care, sustainability, and reciprocity might look like in the face of a changing climate. As wildfires, floods, and other extreme events become increasingly present in our lives, the exhibition invites us to look beyond each individual crisis and consider the deeper conditions that create them.
