What does it mean to call a place "home" when you have loved—and left—many?
Gṛhāntara is a Sanskrit word formed from gṛha (“home”) and antara (“between, within, or in-between space”), evoking the space between homes and the inner landscape of belonging, longing, and the many places that come to feel like our own.
The final recital under The Salon Series features Hindustani vocalist Shoumi Roy in a deeply personal exploration of the many ways we come to understand home—not simply as a place, but as a feeling shaped by familiarity, connection, memory, and belonging. Through rāga, melody, rhythm, and poetry rooted in the emotive tradition of Hindustani classical music and its various forms, Gṛhāntara emerges from a life lived across countries and cultures.
Shoumi is an independent Indian classical and semi-classical vocalist, performer and educator whose artistry stems from the guru-shishya parampara, and has been shaped by over three decades of intensive training across diverse traditions and styles of gayaki. A former scholar of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, under Padma Vibhushan Dr. Girija Devi and Shri Omkar Dadarkar, she is trained in Khayal, Thumri, Dadra and other semi-classical and folk genres of Indian music like Kajri, Chaiti, Hori and Tappa. Her knowledge of music extends across genres like Ghazal, Rabindra Sangeet and Bhajans. Shoumi's musical journey has enabled her to develop her own artistic voice while remaining faithful to the spirit of this centuries-old art form. Alongside her performing career spanning across live concerts and television in India, U.A.E, United States, Australia and Canada, Shoumi serves as a passionate proponent of quality performance experiences and music education through platforms like Uniting Voices Chicago, Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and her own arts organisation, SoundLoom.
Shoumi will be joined by Sunny Matharu (Tabla) Mohan Bhide (Harmonium) and Pavittar Singh Namdhari (Esraj)
Come expecting an intimate evening of Hindustani music—one that moves between longing and joy, rootedness and restlessness, nostalgia and discovery.
Because sometimes, home is not a place we return to.
Sometimes, home is what we carry with us.
The Salon Series presents three hour-long recitals by local Indian classical performing artists whose years of dedicated study, training, and performance have shaped distinctive artistic voices. Presented across July, September, and October, the series offers audiences a closer encounter with the depth, nuance, and evolving traditions of Indian classical music and dance as embodied in the practice of our artists.
This program is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver, and is funded in part by the BC Live Performance Network's Community Presenters Assistance Grant & Vancouver Foundation's LEVEL BIPOC Grant.
