Praised as “essential reading” by The Globe and Mail, Kamal Al-Solaylee’s bestseller, Brown, offers a stunning assessment about the meaning of being brown. Brown is an experience, a state of mind, he explains. The historical representation of issues divided along black and white lines have left out millions of people whose stories of migration and racial experiences have shaped our modern world. Sharing stories from reporting conducted over two years in 10 countries, Al-Solaylee balances striking research about the experiences of workers and immigrants throughout the world with reflections about his own identity as a brown-skinned person. He speaks with Charlie Smith, Editor of The Georgia Straight, about his research and experience.
About the author: Kamal Al-Solaylee is an associate professor at the School of Journalism at Ryerson University and was previously a distinguished writer at The Globe and Mail. His bestselling memoir, Intolerable, was a finalist for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Nonfiction Prize, the Lambda Literary Award, and Canada Reads.
This event takes place on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Squamish, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.
