Since 1894, the Museum has been building a collection on behalf of the people of Vancouver. Until the late 1960s, the Museum's collection grew erratically, in reaction to the tastes of local collectors and offers from potential donors. Bridging archaeology, ethnology, natural history, and settlers’ effects, the trajectory of the accessions brought a diverse object based collection of the world to Vancouver. More recently, particularly since the 1980s, collecting at the Museum has become more directed; its current acquisitions highlight a desire to exhibit Vancouver to the world.
Jillian's presentation will explore multiple single item accessions of the museum's early collection - a collection that has amassed 70,000 artifacts - in addition to highlighting sub-collections, such as the Major James S. Matthews’ Collection. Major Matthews served as the City of Vancouver’s first Archivist, documenting the pioneer and early civic history of this city. Matthews' based collection serves as the primary inspiration for the museum’s current feature exhibition, All Together Now: Vancouver Collectors and Their Worlds.
Jillian Povarchook spent her early childhood sitting quietly in the room which her mother worked:the First Peoples Gallery at the Royal BC Museum. More recently, Jillian attended SFU where she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a concentration in Middle East and Islamic Studies. Jillian additionally engaged with a working group studying the connection between Domestic Spaces and Citizenship while working on her degree. She is in her sixth year of lovingly tending to the artefacts of the Museum of Vancouver’s collection as MOV's Curatorial Associate.
