Ruby & Smith: Vancouver’s First Lady and Duke of Uke, Daphne Roubini and Andrew Smith are Ukulele Jazz/Folk Balladeers. With her captivating voice and their ukulele skills, together they’ve wowed crowds at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Vancouver Jazz Fest and Mission Folk Fest, in addition to delighting audiences across Canada and their native UK.
As the founders of Ruby’s Ukes, the World’s largest Ukulele School outside Hawaii, they’re at the forefront of the new generation of performers. They will be performing an enchanting set, bringing their unique Ukulele magic to the York Theatre.
They will be joined by special guests, Vancouver music scene stalwarts, Timothy Tweedale and Patrick Metzger.
Ruby’s Ukulele Orchestra:
The Ruby’s Ukulele Orchestra is a 70 piece Ukulele Orchestra with heart, soul, vision, diversity and style. After their very successful debut show this Summer, this new addition to the Vancouver Ukulele Scene will inspire, enliven, and entice you gently into the amazing world of Ukulele that is taking the world by storm. Ruby had a dream in 2009, when she started Ruby’s Ukes Ukulele School, that one day she would set up a Ukulele Orchestra. In meeting arranger and conductor Timothy Tweedale in September 2015 her dream was realized. Performing a repertoire from David Bowie to Bizet’s Opera Carmen this is a project with energy and raw talent. Each of the members of the Orchestra started playing the Ukulele at Ruby’s Ukes and are a testament to the power of beautiful music made simply.
