Ever thought about reincarnation, living forever, or selling your soul to the devil? David Belke’s 10×2 The Eternal Courtship has all of that and Romance too. Ephraim, an evil man cursed with immortality, bets he can win the love of a barmaid in 1399 London. This launches him into a romantic pursuit stretching through the centuries from the middle ages to modern times. Under the watch of the mysterious and ever-present Host, the couple meets every 75 years as the barmaid Constance reincarnates into a dizzying array of different women through the years. But in order to find love, Ephraim must learn his own heart and become more human.
Director’s Notes
Taking on David Belke’s Ten times Two: The Eternal Courtship is much like wrangling an octopus. You first think all I have to do is hit the thing on the head, but then its clinging legs get hold of you and you’re sucked into the depths of history, you just get one era sorted and come up for air, only to drown in another time period 75 years later! A real challenge for the designers and actors especially the amazing Colleen Byberg, ho has had to master nine characters. On first reading, one thinks the play fairly simple; one location and three people returning on November first every 75 years. But Mr. Belke is a complex and talented Canadian playwright with a passion for the themes of good and evil, he gives us hope, humour, history, mystery, and love. He stretches our imaginations, allows us to believe that there are truly evil people in the world who can live
forever, and that death may just be a conduit to another personality and another life. And more importantly that given a second chance anything might happen. In the first few scenes we discover that Constance, the barmaid, is attracted to Ephraim, the eternal evildoer. Aided by The Host,
Ephraim travels through time, meeting Constance every 75 years, from 1400 to 2075, with amusing and dire consequences. So engage your magination, sharpen your interest in history and fine tune your funny bone. If you enjoy our tale, please tell your friends.
