Ivan Coyote, Ashley Little (British Columbia), Lisa Moore (Newfoundland and Labrador), Ann Y. K. Choi (Ontario)
Ann Y.K. Choi’s novel tackles the struggles of being caught between two cultures: from the protagonist’s Korean mother’s traditional expectations to learning what it means to be Canadian. With wry humour, Ivan Coyote’s memoir recounts growing up as a tomboy in Canada’s Yukon. In Ashley Little’s novel, Tucker’s mom is a touring stripper and he’s sent to live in a youth group home. Lisa Moore talks about her first novel for young adult readers, in which 16-year-old Flannery’s mother can’t pay the heating bills and young love is a potent and potentially damaging experience. You’re not as alone as you may think through the highs and lows of your teen years.
Suitable for Grades 10-12 and adults
