Gail Anderson-Dargatz’s novel slides between white and First Nations cultures knit together by environmental crises. Métis author Joan Crate heard about residential schools from family friends, but wanted to explore both sides of that history: the children and those in charge. Although not indigenous herself, Jennifer Manuel spent years as an activist for First Nations issues before writing her novel. Her narrator treads carefully: “try to know the other, but never assume to know the other.” Says Manuel, “Our national narrative … is a collage of stories who truths reside in the juxtapositions.” Four authors talk about stepping carefully over the cultural divide.“
